What led you to become a poet?

Before dedicating myself entirely to words, I was a lawyer. I chose this profession because I was in love with words, and I knew that the tool to defend a client was through language. That idea fascinated me. However, I realized that something colossal was missing: emotion. I discovered creative writing when I was a teenager, sharing poems and stories on the first social network that came to Spain, Fotolog.

Ten years later, I dared to do the same on Instagram, when I quit my job as a lawyer and wanted to get closer to the world of creative writing. I have always been a writer, ever since I was a teenager and I wrote without being asked.

¿Qué te llevó a convertirte en poeta?

Antes de dedicarme por completo a las palabras, yo era abogada. Elegí esta profesión porque estaba enamorada de las palabras, y me constaba que la herramienta para defender a un cliente era a través del lenguaje. Esa idea me fascinaba. Sin embargo me di cuenta de que faltaba algo colosal: la emoción. Descubrí la escritura creativa cuando era adolescente, compartiendo poemas y relatos en la primera red social que llegó a España, Fotolog. 

Diez años más tarde, me atreví a hacer lo mismo en Instagram, cuando dejé mi trabajo como abogada y quise acercarme al mundo de la escritura creativa.  Siempre he sido escritora, desde que era adolescente y escribía sin que nadie me lo pidiese.

Do you have a favorite poem that you always return to? Which?

¿Tienes un poema favorito al que siempre regresas? ¿Cuál es?

Where do you go for inspiration?

I don't go anywhere, in particular, to get inspired. I'd like to tell you that I know how to find inspiration, but I don't know yet. I think the process is rather the opposite: to be very attentive to when inspiration reaches me, to know how to catch it decisively. In my case, that happens by quickly writing down the idea or message that has come to mind in my notes on my phone and working on it afterward.

¿A dónde vas para inspirarte?

No suelo ir a ningún sitio en especial a inspirarme. Me gustaría decirte que sé cómo encontrar la inspiración, pero todavía no lo sé. Creo que el proceso es más bien el opuesto: estar muy atenta a cuando la inspiración llega a mí, saber atraparla con decisión. En mi caso eso pasa por apuntar rapidamente la idea o mensaje que me ha venido a la mente en mis notas del móvil y desarrollarla a posteriori.

Your poetry is written in both English and Spanish. We have only seen this in the poetry of Natalia Toledo, who translated Zapotec into English. How has the language influenced your work?

Yes, in this piece I found it interesting that the poems were in two languages because since it is a relationship between two people who come from different parts of the world, it seemed to me that it made sense. On the other hand, this provides the reader with "different shades of meaning", which is just what poetry is so powerful for.

Tu poesía está escrita tanto en inglés como en español. Esto solo lo hemos visto en la poesía de Natalia Toledo, que tradujo el zapoteco al inglés. ¿Cómo ha influido el idioma en tu trabajo?

Sí, en esta obra me pareció interesante que los poemas estuvieran en dos idiomas porque al tratarse de una relación entre dos personas que vienen de distintos lugares del mundo, me parecía que tenía sentido. Por otro lado esto proporciona al lector “different shades of meaning”, que es justo para lo que la poesía es tan poderosa.
